社家とは、上賀茂神社に使えた神官たちの屋敷のことで、古くは15世紀からあったといわれている。
錦部家の旧宅は現存する社家の中で最も昔の面影をとどめる。
庭園は平安後期である一一八一年、上賀茂神社の神主の藤木重保が作庭したもの。
